Where’s Waldo? November 16, 2007

Everyone has to remember the ‘Where’s Waldo?’ books, right? He’s the little guy with the glasses, stripey shirt, and the ‘interesting’ hat. He was created by an artist called Martin Handford. Handford drew crowd scenes, which supposedly had Waldo somewhere on every page. Sometimes it was pretty hard to find Waldo, if you weren’t used to looking for him or didn’t know what he looked like.
Initially… it’s pretty easy to find him, but as you go on through the books, it gets harder and harder. Usually the hard ones have the real Waldo amongst a whole bunch of look-a-like Waldos – who all have small differences from the real Waldo.
Waldo is always there. Just sometimes, he is elusive.
It’s pretty much the same idea with God. He’s always there – everywhere (Present), but sometimes he seems elusive.
Which leads back to ‘Rainbow days’. Which I’ve blogged about before, HERE. Rainbow days are the days where we can see God move - clearly. Sometimes it’s good to remind yourself of the days God has already ‘moved’ – perhaps when you find God elusive.
Conclusion: God, just like Waldo, is always there. Even if we struggle to ’spot’ him.

Day 4
Today was perhaps better than Wednesday. I’m undecided.
Today, we checkout out the city of David (or where it used to be). This pretty much consisted of having a look at some old ruins, and watching a mini-movie of what the city would have looked like back in David’s day. Obviously it’s changed since then. The old city has moved completely. The only thing that has pretty much kept it’s original location is the Temple (mount).
We also had a wander through Hezekiah’s tunnel. This was a way of getting water into the city, without having to go outside the city’s walls. Major tunnel. I got more than a bit wet (didn’t roll up my shorts like Brian and Scotty did…), and it’s was pretty dark. But an awesome experience. It’s pretty much the oldest – non modernised part of Israel that I’ve been in, which goes right back to Biblical times (David’s time).
We also visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is supposedly the area where Jesus was crucified, where he was buried, etc. I didn’t enjoy this place overly much. The church(es) own/share this between about 5/6 different denominations or whatever. Plus, I got the distinct impression that people were getting a little too excited about ‘objects’, ’symbols’, ‘icons’ and ‘idols’. Wasn’t my favourite experience. Perhaps I’ll blog about it another time.

Day 3
Thursday. What a tiring day!
Today we (that’s Brian, Scott, Monica and Myself) went to a place (first of all) called Masada. It’s another one of Herod’s fortresses/palaces. This thing was huge, and on top of a very, very, large, high up hill – which of course we hiked up. Other sissy tourists got a cable car/gondola up to the top – but not the Re:Hope reps!
I of course, due to my lack of fitness (and asthma) was gasping for air by the time we got up the top. Apparently this was a ‘pleasure’ palace for Herod – which I’m sure, he enjoyed climbing to the top much more than I did. It was also used in the first Jewish-Roman war, where roughly 1000 Jewish defenders chose mass suicide, rather than fight the masses of Romans who built huge seige ramps in order to attack the Jews.
After Masada, we headed to a place called David’s waterfall – which is supposedly the place which Psalm 42 was based on – David’s favourite retreat spot.
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my sould pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”. These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so distrubed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.
My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon – from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.”
OK. Enough of David’s waterfall. After that, we went to the Dead sea. This place is amazing. It’s 1378 ft below sea level, and it’s 8.6 times saltier than the ocean – and trust me, after getting a tiny bit of this stuff in my mouth, it’s freaking salty. Biblically, it was a place of refuge for King David – funnily enough it’s right near David’s waterfall! Because of it’s salty-ness, and the other chemically stuff in there, you don’t swim in the dead sea. You float. It’s crazy. Check out the pictures (which are coming soon!).
Over and Out.

Day 2
So on Wednesday Brian and I (my American/wanna be scottish companion) decided to throw cation to the wind, and head into the areas which aren’t exactly the ’safest’ places to go if your from America/Scotland. We headed into Bethlehem first off – where we checked out the Church where Jesus was ’supposedly’ born, as well as the Shepard’s field where (supposedly) the angel spoke to the shepards.
Our guide was a guy called Majde (That’s most likely the wrong spelling) who lived and owned a shop in Bethlehem. This guy was quality. Quality = a good guy. He closed his shop, went and filled his car up with gas, and offered to show us around the ’sites’. He was an x-tour guide as well - so he knew what he was talking about too.
In order to even get into Bethlehem though, we had to go through ‘the wall’. There’s alot of issues here with the Palastines and Israelies – so the security is pretty tight in between the 2. We’re talking passport checking, metal detectors, and guys with machine guns or uzi’s. Nothing that Ingraham (Brian) and me couldn’t handle obviously.
After Bethlehem, we headed off to a place called Herodian – which was one of Herod’s (for the time of Jesus) palaces/fortresses/citadels. This thing was genious. It was atop a man made hill (which thankfully we drove most of the way up!), and had a whole network of mad made tunnels underneath. Herod certainly took his safety into account when building this thing.
Driving about proved interesting as well. Every now and again there are checkpoints (more guys with machine guns) where cars get stopped, searched, etc. We didn’t have much of a problem though – perhaps because Brian and I were in the car?
Last stop of the day was a place called Hebron. If you know your Old testiment – this was David’s first capital city – before he went off and decided Jerusalem was a better place to live. This was where Isaac, Abraham and their two wives Rachel and Sarah were buried. The security was pretty tight here aswell. Apparently, the Mosque/synagogue (it’s split into two areas) place we actually visited and got shown around had a gunman come in a while back, and open fire on the people inside.
So, all in all, Brian and I had to take our belts off about 4 or 5 times each. It gets a bit repetative after the first 2 times or so. Metal detectors!
My favourite day so far!

So, On Monday I left for Israel, and have spent the past 2 days checking out parts of Jerusalem and ‘other areas’.
It’s been Brilliant. Yesterday (Tuesday) I spent a while wandering about the ‘Old City’ of Jerusalem. Obviously that’s the ‘current’ old city. Seeing as it’s been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times. I went and saw the Western wall too – which is the remaining part of the retaining wall around the temple mount from the Second Temple from the time of the Roman destruction. After that, we climbed the Mount of Olives and looked out on the Old city from the Top. Just an easy first day.
It’s amazing to walk in the land where Jesus walked 2000 years ago. It’s honestly quite exciting. Having said that, it’s obviously changed dramatically since then. But you can still see where certain things were, areas where stuff happened, etc. It’s going to be really interesting to read through the old testament again and be able to relate that to a real life experience – having been in Israel.
I’ll blog about today and the next few days later. And I’ve still to get photographs to go up with this as well (can’t transfer them to a computer here).
Stay tuned. Haha.
Present November 9, 2007

I’m pretty much always never sure when it comes to people praying basically for Jesus to come into a certain place or when it comes to singing songs that ‘invite’ God to be in a certain place, at a certain time.
David says “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” and then later on… “Where can I go from your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139).
Why do we pray, or worship as if God isnt already there?
God isn’t somewhere else. He’s right here. Wherever you are right now. It’s Gods world. He made it didn’t he? He owns it? And he’s present everywhere in it.
You see it with Jacob in Genesis, when Jacob says:
“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
Jacob has just woke up from physical sleep. But he’s woke up from spiritual sleep as well, and discovered that God was always there in the first place.
We need to start living our lives like God is present.
God doesn’t show up or arrive on the scene in the last minute – he’s always there to begin with.
I take comfort in the knowledge that wherever I am, whatever I’m doing – God’s right there with me.

That’s right… How are we spending time together as a church? We play football (the american version…). It’s only happened once or twice so far, but it’s fun. It’s definately worth the pain – to see people like your pastor fall flat on his face, or your worship leader standing on the side lines. Haha.
It’s only a matter of time before the guys in our church get good enough to have a team, and then we can challenge whoever else plays football in our City – and show them God’s love – in a rough physical sorta way.
Hense, when we’re sending leaders out – someone is going to have to start Re:football – Next generation football church!

Longing for how it used to be…
The early days of a relationship when it’s that warm fuzzy feeling?
Or the person who used to be the star athlete?
Or the group where they long for how it used to be?
How much energy do people use up, and time do they waste – wishing and longing for how things used to be? It’s not going to happen. We’re not the same person we were yesterday, or 5 years ago, and we never will be. And things are not how they were yesterday, today.
I believe part of moving forward with God, is leaving everything else to him. It’s part of giving yourself fully to Christ. How am I meant to grow in my relationship with God, and move further into it… if I’m holding onto something in the past – be that good or bad?
People can’t hold on to how things used to be, or to baggage, or to old sins, or past glories, or anything… and expect to move forward.
If we’re still holding on to things in the past, or how things were… our arms aren’t free to embrace today.
Love (with a bit of Perseverance…) November 5, 2007
Posted by jonesy24 in The Bible - it's quality stuff!, What's happening with me..., You and me.add a comment
Without Love… we’re nothing. Without it, we are empty. You can have absolutely everything else, but without Love – it counts for nothing. I can do anything, and everything within my power, but without love… I gain nothing.
So Love is a key part of our lives if we’re living the way God wants us to.
What is Love though?
In 1 Corinthians 13:4 -7 it gives us an idea about what Love should look like.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not pround. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. …”
We also see right at the end of 1 Corinthians 13 that out of faith, hope and Love – Love is the greatest. So… it’s a big thing.
I’ve got to be honest. I’m only coming up on 19. But already I want to be a good husband for whenever it is I get married, and whoever it is I get married to. And there’s no greater teacher than God right? Seeing as he’s the creator of Love? “God is Love.”
So here (vs. 4-8) we see examples of what Love is.
I’m kindof under the impression now that love isn’t the ‘warm fuzzy feeling’ you have for your girlfriend or boyfriend, or spouse in the first so many years of marriage. That may be part of it, yes… but there’s alot more to it than that.
I’ll be honest. If I want to tick myself off next to what Paul says is Love… I’ve still got a lot of work to do.
My favourite has to be this one though. Love always perseveres.
I don’t like hearing about divorces, and break ups, and fall outs, and tiffs, so on. Especially in marriage. First off because it’s not biblical. Second… why do people always look back on ‘when they first started dating’ or the ‘first year or two’ of marriage as if it was so much better then? If that’s the case, from my point of view… they’re doing it all wrong.
What do you get from dwelling on the past? Nothing. That’s why we should be living in today, the now, and towards the future.
Once I find someone, get married, etc. I want to be constantly growing more in love with whoever they are. I don’t want to look back on the early days with longing. I don’t want to, 20 years from now, want to go back to ‘the way it was’. (I’m going to blog about this in about 10 mins – so I won’t talk about it too much here). Part of love is making choices – it’s not all based on the warm fuzzy feeling. Making choices to forgive, and persevere, and trust more, and be open with, etc. To be one with one another.
I think marriages go down the drain because people expect that ‘warm fuzzy feeling’ to be there all the time. Or… that they expect to never disagree, like it was when they first started dating.
Dr Cox for Scrubs says this (which describes perseverance):
“Bottom line: it’s couples who are truly right for each other wade through the same crap as everybody else, but the big difference is they don’t let it take them down. One of those two people will stand up and fight for that relationship every time.”

We are most certainly getting there! Wherever’there’ is.
Over the last while, our worship team has just been
gettingbetter and better. I say this as a member of the worship team obviously, so allow me to explain what I mean.
Not only are we coming together alot better musically (less hiccups and silly mistakes), we’re getting to know one another better musically too. We’ve got a leader who we know how to follow, and he leads us well. We’ve became (in my opinion) more sensitive to what the Spirit wants us to do. We’re having to worry less about what we’re doing, and are able to focus on God while leading a congregation to the place of Worship.
It’s absolutely amazing how we’ve grown as a team, and as lead worshippers.
I pray that we continue to grow in worship, to be worshippers in Spirit and in Truth, who are able to lead our congregation into worshipping the true and living God. I bless our leader, and our team, and most of all, I thank God for what he’s doing with us, and in our Church. HIS Church.
